The NISAR mission, born from a 2014 agreement between ISRO and NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL), showcases the strength of India-US collaboration. ISRO has contributed the S-band radar, the satellite bus, and the GSLV-F16, which will place NISAR in a 743 km Sun-synchronous orbit with a 98.4-degree inclination. NASA has provided the L-band radar, GPS receivers, and advanced data systems. This synergy has created a satellite that combines the best of both agencies’ expertise, setting a new standard for international space missions.

The path to launch has been meticulous. Initially planned for March 2024, the mission faced delays due to concerns about the radar antenna’s thermal performance. The antenna was sent to JPL for a specialized coating, then returned to ISRO’s Satellite Integration and Testing Establishment in Bengaluru by October 2024. By January 2025, NISAR was fully integrated and shipped to Sriharikota, ready for its historic launch.
