India Strikes Gold: Massive Reserves Discovered in Odisha

18

Bhubaneswar, August 18, 2025 – The Geological Survey of India (GSI) has uncovered significant gold deposits across multiple districts in Odisha, positioning the state as a potential new hub for gold mining in India. Preliminary geological indicators suggest potential reserves of 10–20 metric tonnes, a discovery that could bolster India’s domestic gold production and stimulate economic growth in the region.

Discovery Across Multiple Districts

The GSI, in collaboration with Odisha’s Directorate of Mines and Geology, identified gold reserves in at least eight districts: Deogarh, Keonjhar, Sundargarh, Nabarangpur, Angul, Koraput, Mayurbhanj, and Boudh. Specific locations include the Adasa-Rampalli region in Deogarh and Gopur-Gajipur in Keonjhar, where exploration has progressed to the G2 level, involving detailed sampling and drilling. Additional exploratory work is ongoing in areas like Jashipur, Suriaguda, and Badampahad in Mayurbhanj, as well as Malkangiri and Sambalpur districts.

Odisha’s Mines Minister, Bibhuti Bhushan Jena, confirmed these findings in the Odisha Legislative Assembly in March 2025, sparking widespread interest in the state’s mining potential. The discovery, initially identified during a GSI survey for copper in Deogarh, revealed gold deposits that could transform Odisha’s mineral landscape.

Economic and Strategic Impact

While India imports 700–800 metric tonnes of gold annually, its domestic production remains minimal at 1.6 tonnes per year (as of 2020). The estimated 10–20 metric tonnes of gold in Odisha, though modest compared to import volumes, represents a significant step toward reducing reliance on foreign gold. The discovery is expected to attract investment, create jobs, and drive infrastructure development in Odisha, a state already rich in minerals, holding 96% of India’s chromite, 52% of bauxite, and 33% of iron ore reserves.

The Odisha government, alongside the Odisha Mining Corporation (OMC), is fast-tracking efforts to commercialize these finds. Plans are underway to auction the first gold mining block in Deogarh, marking a historic milestone for the state’s mining sector. This auction, guided by the Mines and Minerals (Development and Regulation) Act, is expected to draw both domestic and international investors.

Exploration and Next Steps

The GSI’s exploration has advanced from G3 (initial reconnaissance) to G2-level assessments in key areas like Adasa-Rampalli and Gopur-Gajipur. These efforts involve detailed geological mapping, drilling, and laboratory analysis to determine ore grade and extractability. Technical committees are evaluating the feasibility of commercial mining, while environmental and social impact assessments are planned to ensure sustainable development.

The state government is also exploring copper and platinum deposits in Keonjhar, further diversifying Odisha’s mineral portfolio. Infrastructure development, including roads, power, and water systems, will be critical to support mining operations. Experts estimate that commercial production could begin within 5–8 years, pending regulatory approvals and investment.

A New Gold Hub for India

Odisha’s gold discovery is a game-changer for the state’s economy and India’s mineral strategy. While it won’t fully offset the country’s gold import needs, it offers a strategic opportunity to boost domestic production, create employment, and foster regional development. The state’s proactive approach to auctions and sustainable mining practices could position Odisha as a leading player in India’s gold market.

As exploration continues and mining plans take shape, Odisha’s gold reserves promise to shine brightly, offering economic benefits and reinforcing the state’s status as a mineral powerhouse. Stay tuned for updates as Odisha prepares to auction its first gold mining block and unlock the potential of this golden jackpot.
