Telangana Drenched by Heavy Rains: Eturnagaram Records 191 mm, Hyderabad Sees 32 mm Average

27

Hyderabad, August 19, 2025 – Telangana witnessed widespread rainfall over the past 24 hours, with intense downpours soaking multiple districts, particularly in the northern and eastern regions. Eturnagaram in Mulugu district recorded a staggering 191 mm of rainfall, while Hyderabad’s Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) area averaged 32 mm, with Miyapur logging the highest at 52 mm. The heavy rains, driven by a low-pressure area (LPA) over the Bay of Bengal, have led to waterlogging, disrupted road connectivity, and heightened alerts across the state, as authorities urge residents to remain cautious.

Record Rainfall Across Telangana

The Telangana State Development Planning Society (TGDPS) reported significant rainfall across the state, with Mulugu district bearing the brunt of the monsoon’s fury. Eturnagaram recorded 191 mm of very heavy rainfall between 8:30 AM on August 18 and 8:30 AM on August 19, closely aligning with earlier reports of 161 mm by 9 PM on August 18. Other areas in Mulugu, such as Mangapet, saw 186.5 mm, while Venkatapuram recorded 117.5 mm. Districts like Adilabad (Jainad, 107 mm), Bhadradri Kothagudem, and Jayashankar Bhupalpally also crossed the 100 mm mark, leading to overflowing roads and flooding in low-lying areas.

In Hyderabad, the GHMC area experienced more rainfall than anticipated, with continuous showers through the night. The average rainfall across GHMC zones was approximately 32 mm, with Miyapur recording the highest at 52 mm. Other areas like Kukatpally (44 mm), Malkajgiri (42 mm), and Kapra (40 mm) also saw significant precipitation, though lighter drizzle dominated later in the day. The heavy rains caused waterlogging in low-lying areas, prompting the GHMC to issue warnings and deploy response teams.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) attributed the intense rainfall to a low-pressure area over the west-central and northwest Bay of Bengal, which intensified into a depression. This system, coupled with favorable monsoon conditions, triggered widespread thunderstorms, lightning, and gusty winds (30-40 kmph) across Telangana, with Mulugu, Bhadradri Kothagudem, and other northern districts experiencing the heaviest impact.

Impact and Response

The relentless downpour disrupted daily life, particularly in rural areas. In Mulugu, police advised residents to avoid crossing overflowing culverts and roads near the Godavari River, where low-lying areas faced flooding risks. In Medak and Kamareddy districts, authorities issued similar cautions, with four people—three shepherds and a farmer—rescued along with 560 sheep from floodwaters in Chetlur village, Kamareddy, by the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) and Fire Services.

In Hyderabad, the GHMC and Hyderabad Disaster Response and Asset Protection Agency (HYDRAA) were on high alert, with senior officials conducting field inspections to address waterlogging and public grievances. GHMC Commissioner RV Karnan emphasized preparedness, stating, “We are constantly monitoring the situation, and our teams are ready to tackle any emergencies.” Residents were urged to avoid travel to low-lying areas and follow State Disaster Management Authority (SDMA) guidelines.

The heavy rainfall also brought cooler temperatures, with Hyderabad recording 24°C to 26°C, a few degrees below the August average, providing relief from the usual heat. However, waterlogged roads and inundated low-lying areas disrupted traffic and connectivity, particularly in northern GHMC zones like Miyapur, Kukatpally, and Gachibowli.

Today’s Forecast: More Rains Ahead

The IMD and TGDPS forecast continued rainfall across Telangana on August 19, though with reduced intensity in some areas. Hyderabad is expected to see light to moderate showers (20-50 mm), with the possibility of intense spells adding 20-30 mm in the evening, accompanied by gusty winds up to 45-55 kmph. Northern and eastern districts, including Mulugu, Bhadradri Kothagudem, and Jayashankar Bhupalpally, remain under a red alert for heavy to very heavy rainfall (up to 150-200 mm), with thunderstorms and lightning likely until 8:30 AM on August 20.

Private forecasters, such as Telangana Weatherman, predicted “non-stop moderate rains” in Mahabubabad, Warangal, Hanmakonda, and Jangaon, with Mulugu and Bhupalpally facing severe rainfall in the early hours of August 19. The forecast indicates that the LPA’s influence will wane after today, with lighter showers expected from August 20 to 21 and a brief break from August 22 to 24 before another system potentially impacts the state.

For Hyderabad, the TGDPS projects moderate rainfall in southern and eastern zones like LB Nagar, Rajendranagar, and Uppal, while northern and western areas, including Chandanagar and Serilingampally, may see lighter showers. The 72-hour outlook up to August 21 suggests a gradual reduction in rainfall activity across the GHMC area.

Looking Ahead

The heavy rainfall has highlighted Telangana’s vulnerability to monsoon-related disruptions, particularly in rural districts where flooding has severed village road links. The state government and GHMC are prioritizing infrastructure resilience, with ongoing efforts to clear waterlogged areas and restore connectivity. The IMD’s red alert for northern districts underscores the need for continued vigilance, especially in Mulugu, where rainfall has approached extreme levels.

For residents, the GHMC advises securing essentials, avoiding waterlogged areas, and monitoring official updates. As Telangana braces for more showers, the state’s disaster response mechanisms are being tested, with authorities urging caution to prevent loss of life or property.
